Hardwood Flooring Countertops - DYI

Build Your Own Wood Countertops

Wood Countertops
So you think wood countertops look really good, but you are on a budget. Try this idea for wood countertops - hardwood flooring, in your choice of colors for a country kitchen look.

Hardwood flooring is very tough, it is available in many colors, many types of wood, and looks great when finished.

Hardwood flooring is not as expensive as other countertop materials and you can do the work yourself.  You will need to remove the old countertop, install a plywood deck on top of your cabinets to nail the hardwood flooring onto, and then finish it with oil or poly-urithane finish.  You can save a step here if you use pre-finished hardwood. One-inch wood pieces make a sturdier surface, but if you decking is heavy enough, you could use thinner 3/8" hardwood strips .  You also may want to use tile near your stove top to set hot pans on and so the wood will not be too close to open flames of a nature gas cook top.

Install the hardwood on the countertop with a flooring nailer or nail gun. Be careful the nail set into the wood so that each piece of tongue and groove flooring fits snugly.  Cut tongue from flooring pieces for use on edges for a clean finished look, and route the sharp corner slightly for smooth rounded edge. Liquid nails could be used on the edge pieces to prevent nail holes and filler form a continued clean look.
